What is a SAP?
A SAP is a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional who evaluates drivers after a violation and recommends appropriate education or treatment so you can safely return to duty.
How long does the DOT SAP process take?
Most drivers complete the DOT SAP process in a few weeks, depending on how quickly they begin and comply with education or treatment and how soon follow-up appointments can be scheduled.
Can I return to duty immediately after the evaluation?
No. You must first complete all SAP education or treatment recommendations and then successfully pass a DOT Return-to-Duty test before you can resume safety-sensitive duties.
What should I expect during the DOT SAP process?
You will complete an initial clinical evaluation, follow specific education or treatment recommendations, return for a follow-up evaluation, and then follow a written follow-up testing plan once you are cleared.
What happens if I fail a DOT drug or alcohol test?
You are immediately removed from safety-sensitive duties, and DOT rules require you to complete the SAP process before you can be eligible to return to any DOT-regulated safety-sensitive position.
How do I start the Return-to-Duty process?
You contact a qualified SAP, schedule your evaluation, complete all recommended education or treatment, and follow the SAP’s written instructions for returning to duty and follow-up testing.
Is my information confidential?
Yes. Your information is handled confidentially under DOT regulations, and only parties who are required to know, such as employers, MROs, or consortiums, receive the compliance information they need.
